Carpentry and Joinery Technology

Course Description
Construction is the largest industry in terms of investment and manpower expended. Carpenters make up the largest trade group in the construction industry. They erect the wood framework in buildings; they install wood paneling, cabinets, door and window frames, and hardware; and they build stairs and frame roofs. Carpenters work under a wide variety of conditions, indoors and out, in all types of weather.

They use many different hand and power tools working with wood, concrete, metals, plastics, and other construction materials. Good work habits, mechanical aptitude, and strong communication and math skills are necessary to become a successful carpenter. Carpenters must be able to climb, lift, carry, measure, calculate, and plan their work. They often work at considerable heights.

Building Construction Technology

In this programme, students learn to read blueprints, sketches and specifications for information pertaining dimensions, type of materials required and standards of work. VCID programme on Building Construction Technology capitalizes on gaining experience by working with a variety of hand tools, power tools and construction equipment.

Fabrication and Welding Technology

Why the course

This course is specially designed to train participants in the various aspects of welding technologies and build up the competencies required to implement the technologies in various industrial applications. These include welding processes, weld design, weldability testing methods, process automation, distortion control, selection of materials and welding processing parameters. This course would also benefit engineers who wish to refresh their fundamentals and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in welding technology. The knowledge gained during this course benefits both the participants who stand to upgrade their individual expertise and their companies with the opportunity to improve their competitiveness.

Here you will develop a range of skills, designed to make them highly employable within the industry, including reception skills, sales and promotion, enterprise skills and high level practical skills in their chosen area.


All lecturers in the department have extensive industrial experience and regularly update their skills to ensure that they have an in depth knowledge of the most up to date products, styles and techniques.

Computer Application and Network Administration

At the completion of the Computer Application and Network Administration Certificate Program, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of hardware concepts, standards, tools and test equipment and best practices to properly administer an organization’s computer, network and server equipment
  2. Apply knowledge of operating system concepts, standards and best practices to properly administer an organization’s computer, network and server systems
  3. Design, develop and implement network system and IT security policies and procedures to protect the organization’s resources
  4. Develop the network administrator’s relationship to business and management for effective application of computer and network technologies to business needs

Programme outcome

In this program, you’ll examine the principles, techniques and regulations of the building and construction industry for all types of buildings. At the end of the course, students would have gained practical knowledge and skills as well as become competent in:

  • The use of hand and portable power tools used by carpenters in the construction
  • Working with wood, plastics, concrete, metals, gypsum, and various fiber composite products used by carpenters in the construction industry.
  • The procedures used by carpenters in framing layout, stair construction, wood and steel framing, and installation of doors, windows, and cabinets.
  • In forming systems and types of scaffold used in concrete
  • Graduates will be familiar with and have practiced job site safety requirements.
  • In operating instruments and demonstrate procedures used in building layout.
  • The display of effective work habits deemed necessary by employers.
  • Graduates will be prepared for entry level employment as carpenters and admission to the Carpenters Apprentice Training Program.

Wall and Floor Tiling

In this program, you’ll examine the principles, techniques and regulations of the building and construction industry for all types of medium-rise and wide-span buildings with regards to tiling. At the end of the course, students would have gained practical knowledge and skills as well as become competent in:

  • Safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Handling and storing construction materials and components
  • Mixing construction materials
  • Setting out for construction components
  • Preparing tiles for fixing to wall and floor installations
  • Applying and fixing tiling materials to wall and floor tiling installations
